Highlighted features

Page number in the top margin

@page sets letter paper and one-inch margins; a top-right margin box adds counter(page) above the filing text.

Widow, orphan, and heading-break controls

orphans and widows require at least two body-text lines together, while break-after: avoid keeps section headings with the next paragraph.

Separate word-count certificate and counting helper

break-before: page starts the certificate on its own sheet; count_words.py in the source ZIP counts the marked text.

The argument

This fictional Supreme Court, New York County submission opposes a lender's motion for a declaration about moving a museum's loaned station clock to an off-site conservator. The parties, agreement, index number, and record references are illustrative. The legal authorities are real: Alvarez v Prospect Hospital states the summary-judgment burden; Beal Savings Bank v Sommer directs courts to read the agreement as a whole; Vermont Teddy Bear Co. v 538 Madison Realty Co. cautions against adding terms to clear language; and Donohue v Cuomo explains ambiguity and when evidence outside the text may be considered. None concerns a museum loan.

The brief spans three pages, followed by a separate word-count certificate page. It is an illustrative document, not a filed court paper or legal advice.

How the layout works

The stylesheet defines US Letter paper and one-inch margins with @page. A top-right margin box uses counter(page) for page numbers. Body paragraphs set orphans: 2 and widows: 2; argument headings use break-after: avoid to stay with the following text. Local Source Serif 4 is loaded through @font-face for the double-spaced body text. The court caption uses Flexbox to align the parties with the case number.

An explicit break-before: page starts the word-count certificate as its own sheet. The source ZIP also includes count_words.py, which counts the text marked for certification, along with the font license.
